Schädeldeformationen, kunstvoll geschmückte Kopftrophäen, Ahnenschädel sowie verehrte Reliquien, Gefäße aus Schädelknochen oder Darstellungen in der Kunst von Leonardo da Vinci bis Damien Hirst belegen in mehr als 500 Abbildungen eine Urfaszination bis in die Gegenwart. Ein 36-köpfiges internationales Autorenteam befasst sich in seinen Beiträgen mit dem Thema "Schädelkult" aus natur-, geistes- und kulturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive.
